My wife and i rented bikes and rode the trail on our last day in Alaska. This is a beautiful trail with lots of trees bordering the water. We saw a black bear and and a mama moose. The trail was a little over 11 miles one way. If you like watching planes land and take off, you can enjoy its proximity to the airport! Beluga points was one of the best places in Alaska I visited during March. It’s about 30 mins from downtown anchorage. The view point is across the road with a railway track crossing through. Excellent views of the mountains, with frozen lakes close by. A little close by they have a small hiking trail as well as excellent pond. Would recommend visiting as it’s a super short drive from anchorage!By Ranga Rajan (10 months ago)Nice pullout with parking and interpretive signage. We’ve spotted belugas here twice in the last three years, we’ve had better luck further south. Good spot to bring guests for ample mountain views. Can get very windy at times, so bring your layers. There is a pod of beluga whale that live in these waters year round and this is supposed to be a nice place to be able to see them when they’re around. We unfortunately didn’t get to see the whales but we were still in awe of the beautiful scenery. This is a well-visited location but they do a great job of keeping it clean and free of trash. When traveling south out of Anchorage on the Alaska highway, take some time and stop at Beluga Point. Glacier kayaking was the best part of my trip in Alaska. It was splendid. Trail is in good condition and there are plenty of places to sit and rest. Do that! Know your limitations. Would have loved to have gone to the top but am glad I didn’t push it. Definitely go to the bottom of the glacier for that view and see how far it used to go out to. I am a middle age man in decent shape and I am as able to do the Harding Ice Field hike, 8.2 miles it will take all day. The sight seeing cruises out of Seward are double triple worth it. It was a beautiful beach, very little trash (found two cigarette butts). The water wasn’t even that cold about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Great bus tour. Loved that we were on mo set time schedule. Guide was informative and didn’t care if we took the 5 hours of the tour as scheduled or if we wanted to stop at every tree along the way and spend the entire day. She was said she was there for our trip to be made “Our Trip”. We seen 4 of the big 5 animals but adding in some small animals really made up for not seeing a wolf. Would recommend to anyone going to Alaska and will do again if the get the rest of the rode opened up.
Absolutely beautiful park. Hoped to see more wildlife, but we did see a couple moose, caribou, and a lynx. It was hazy from all of the smoke so we did not see Denali, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
We rode the green transit bus, and our driver was quite knowledgeable and told us many interesting facts about the park. The ride was enjoyable. I did like how he would stop the bus as soon as someone spotted something. Would not have gotten that experience on a tour bus.
Best part of the trip was hiking the Savage River trail loop. Nice trail follows Savage River with mountains on both sides. It was awesome. Highly recommend.
I visited in late May and sadly it’s too early to be able to drive far back into the park to hike at least a little closer to Denali. However, even hiking near the front entrance of the park is worth the time and has gorgeous views with the towering mountains all around you in the distance.
It was really windy when we were there so make sure to have a good jacket if there in the spring.
Better than I thought! The weather on the day we visited was perfect, and we were able to see Mt. Denali. Make sure to check the weather before planning your visit, if it’s too cloudy you may not be able to see it.
We took the shuttle bus around the park and also did a hike near Savage river which was very enjoyable. The shuttle bus had a lot more talking than expected, however the bus driver was very knowledgeable and knew a lot. We were able to see multiple caribou and even a bear. Some of the caribou were right outside of the bus which was amazing to see! Overall beautiful national park with lots of gorgeous scenery and wildlife, definitely worth it.
Simply AMAZING! Didn’t book a tour or even a shuttle as it seemed easier and more convenient to drive your own car in, especially if you just wanted to do a few hikes throughout the park. Arrived around 7:30a and the park was not crowded at all. There was no lines to get in and the main visitor center parking area was basically empty. The visitor center opened at 8a if you needed information or ask questions of the many rangers onsite. There were also maps and informative brochures which answered our questions.
Decided to go on the Horseshoe Lake Trail as it was very close and was not strenuous at all. There is a decent descent down to the like but it was a nice paved path with great views of the mountains and lake. The lake was very reflective and allowed for great photographs. Along the trail there was a nice beaver dam at the lake. With many stops for pictures and along the river and lake, the total hike was still only about 1.5 hours. The ascent back to the street level may be a little tiring at the end, but it’s paved and plenty of room to pull over and rest.
