Navigating the Craigslist Marketplace for Cars in New River Valley: A Comprehensive Guide

The New River Valley region, with its scenic landscapes and vibrant communities, offers a diverse range of transportation needs. Whether you’re a daily commuter, an outdoor enthusiast, or a family seeking a reliable vehicle, finding the perfect car can be a challenging yet exciting endeavor. Craigslist, a popular online classifieds platform, serves as a valuable resource for car buyers and sellers alike, providing a vast selection of vehicles to choose from.

1. Exploring the Craigslist Platform:

To embark on your Craigslist car-buying journey, visit the Craigslist website or download the mobile app. Create an account to access the full range of features, including the ability to save searches, contact sellers, and post your own listings if you’re selling a vehicle.

2. Refining Your Search:

Once you’re on the Craigslist platform, navigate to the “Cars & Trucks” category and select “New River Valley” as your search location. Utilize the powerful search filters to narrow down your options based on make, model, year, price range, mileage, and other relevant criteria. You can also specify additional preferences such as fuel type, transmission type, and features like sunroof or leather seats.

3. Evaluating Listings and Contacting Sellers:

Craigslist listings typically include detailed descriptions, photos, and contact information. Scrutinize each listing thoroughly, paying attention to the condition of the vehicle, any reported issues, and the seller’s reputation. If you find a car that piques your interest, reach out to the seller via email, phone call, or text message to inquire about the vehicle’s availability, schedule a test drive, or negotiate a price.

4. Scheduling a Test Drive and Inspection:

Before committing to a purchase, it’s crucial to conduct a thorough test drive and inspection of the vehicle. Arrange a meeting with the seller at a safe and convenient location, preferably during daylight hours. Take the car for a spin, paying attention to its handling, braking, and overall performance. Examine the vehicle’s exterior and interior for any signs of damage, wear, or potential issues.

5. Ensuring a Secure Transaction:

When it comes to finalizing the transaction, safety and security should be your top priorities. Craigslist recommends meeting in person at a public place, preferably a police station or a bank, to exchange payment and paperwork. Avoid sending money via wire transfer or using payment methods that lack buyer protection.

6. Additional Tips for a Successful Craigslist Car Purchase:

  • Research the Vehicle’s History: Before finalizing the deal, run a vehicle history report to uncover any hidden issues, such as accidents, title issues, or outstanding loans.
  • Bring an Expert: If you’re not confident in your ability to assess the vehicle’s condition, consider bringing a trusted mechanic or a friend with automotive knowledge to assist you during the test drive and inspection.
  • Document the Sale: Create a bill of sale that includes the vehicle’s information, the agreed-upon price, and the date of sale. Both the buyer and seller should sign and retain copies of this document.
  • Transfer Ownership Promptly: After the purchase, promptly transfer the vehicle’s title and registration to your name to avoid any legal complications or liability issues.

By following these guidelines and exercising due diligence throughout the process, you can increase your chances of finding a reliable and suitable vehicle on Craigslist in the New River Valley region. Remember to prioritize safety, transparency, and informed decision-making to ensure a successful and satisfying car-buying experience.

The New River Valley is a region along the New River in Southwest Virginia in the United States.
It is usually defined as the counties of Montgomery (including the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg), Pulaski, Floyd, and Giles and the independent city of Radford, which are all located in the New River watershed. However, in Virginia, the New River also flows through Wythe, Carroll, and Grayson Counties, and its physical watershed includes parts of Tazewell and Bland Counties, and small portions of Smyth and Craig Counties. Outside of Virginia, the New River continues upstream into North Carolina and downstream into West Virginia.
Part of the Great Appalachian Valley, it became a contested frontier area in colonial times, and continued during the westward expansion of the United States. The first European to explore the valley was Abraham Wood of Fort Henry in 1671 and settlements began to develop in the 18th century. A branch of the Great Wagon Road led through the New River Valley. The valley was the location of several small American Civil War battles.
According to the 2000 census, the New River Valley is home to approximately 165,145 residents. The New River Valley is also home to several institutions of higher learning including Virginia Tech, Radford University, Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and New River Community College.

Just went for inspection. I had just replaced key battery. Had worked for 2 days. 3rd day I went for inspection and low key battery came up again. I mentioned and said I would get another battery when I left. They replaced as courtesy. They are always friendly, courteous, and go the extra mile for you.

  1. The Motor Mile Car wash is absolutely outstanding. I hope someone over it doesn’t get a bright idea of changing how it’s run. The guys do a great job and I run all 3 of my Auto’s thought it. My two personal cars and my 2019 Chevy WT every week on the weekends like clock work. The service is outstanding. The management staff’s customer service is superb. So an update after a year this place is still the best place to go for a car wash. My vehicle may have changed but the service here and the cleanliness of the vehicles after they’ve been washed has not. They have even added equipment and services to their washes. The management staff and their crew still doing a top-notch job. There might be other car washes opening up but there’s no reason to go anywhere else when they’re doing the job but they’re doing here. Keep up the great work. You can not beat the price here. They supply vacuums and towels for you.

  2. Hoping it’s, a one off from my usual 5 STARS. Asked to leave my car for 5 hours and yes, need a shuttle. They knew this and then told it’d be 1 1/2 hours before the shuttle got back. ??? Obviously you need another shuttle. A lane manager gave me a ride home (thank you) not wanting to see a 66 year old woman walk Roanoke Street. Then I had to wait to get my car back because it was parked in the lower lot. ???? Hoping the brake line was fixed on this recall.

  3. December 31st I bought a newer used car, a Kia Optima with only 60,000 miles got the top of the line extended warranty at closing and was advised it would cover everything except for brakes and tires, and was strongly advised to purchase this as my manufacturer warranty was expired. A week or two after I brought the car home, the oil light came on. I assumed it was due for an oil change and took it to be done. three weeks later in early February the oil light was back on again. At this time I was more concerned, but also said hey I got the good warranty I made an appointment with shelor service, explained the issue in detail along with my understanding that this was covered by my warranty, by taking it to them I would have no deductible and that I was informed that they would cover a rental. After using a day of PTO I get down there and was told immediately by Tony Lopez in the service department oh burning oil is probably not covered by your warranty. Now at this point I had realized my car was burning around 3 quarts of oil in 1000 miles. But Tony, very unconcerned about the fact that I had just purchased this vehicle, advised me that I would have to pay for a computer reading and an oil change and then I could bring it back in 1000 miles and they would charge me $800 or so for an oil consumption test. I ended up paying several hundred dollars for an oil change and having the computer read my codes when those things could have been waived at thier discretion. I was also told by Tony that the chances of me getting burning oil covered with my warranty were slim to none that he had seen it covered once in the years he had worked there. So much for top of the line warranty. About a month after my first service visit, my car started jumping and jerking and I could barely get home.Tony stated this may resolve the oil issue and they covered it under the warranty. However a week after I was home I was aware that this repair did not fix the burning oil in my car. At this point I involved the finance company in and they worked with shelor and over about 3 more visits, they established my car was indeed burning oil. They advised that the only way my warranty would cover the repairs was to take my engine apart and show them the broken parts that were causing this issue. So my last visit to shelor in April of this year, they took the motor out of the car only to advise me that since the rings were caked with carbon and not actually broken, that once again my warranty would do nothing. I was offered that they would do a small block replacement for $4000 that I could have added into my loan, making the payment way more than I could afford. They also offered to let me trade my car in, but due to negative equity in my current loan those options would have me paying $650 a month for a similar vehicle and this was without any warranty, gap coverage etc, and these options were not viable. In addition, I had checked the carfax for this vehicle and saw that shelor sold and repoed this car late last year and the last owners only had the car for a few months and put like 400 miles on it before it was repossessed. After my experience I truly think that these people also experienced issues with the car and they let it go back. I spoke with finance manager, service managers, and even the CEO of shelor and while some showed empathy, none offered to make this right in any way. I could keep going on because a lot of my interactions were negative and frustrating, but to wrap this long story up, I had to file bankruptcy due to trying to be responsible and buy this warrantied car from shelor motor mile. Shelor could have did more than they did to help me, but instead I am now here with destroyed credit, out several thousand dollars, several vacation days, out a traded in vehicle and with absolutely nothing to show for it. I would never buy a used car from shelor and I would never trust an extended warranty from shelor. If it’s not a new or used vehicle that’s still under the mfg warranty, I would strongly advise you to run the other way.

  4. Unfortunately, they have no used inventory on used trucks. They were pushy on putting us in a new vehicle. Had to just walk out, and the salesman followed us to the door, telling us what great deals they had on new trucks. It was a relief to get away from Shelor Motor Mile.
